How to choose the perfect wedding hairstyle

There are three main reasons every bride wants to look her best on her wedding day. First and foremost, it is a once-in-a-lifetime event. Secondly, it is a day when all eyes are on the bride; including family, friends, and other loved ones (not to mention the groom). Third, and perhaps most importantly, the photos last forever.

When you’re ready to tie the knot, you’ll probably want to have your hair done professionally to ensure that the style is timeless and the look perfectly matches your makeup, jewellery, and attire. You will, however, have final say on your hairstyle, so there are a few things you’ll want to take into consideration before making your selection.

Hair length and type

The first thing to consider when looking at potential wedding hairstyles is the length and texture of your hair. If you have short hair you can definitely add some extensions before the big day to take advantage of longer styles, but your hair will have to be a certain length to start with if you want it to look good. If your hair is longer and you love some of the short cuts you’ve seen, you’ll have to think long and hard about whether or not you really want a trendy cut or if you’d rather go with a timeless style.

As for texture, your best bet is not to fight what you’ve got. If your hair is fine and thin, don’t go crazy trying to make it look like the girls from Pantene commercials. If it’s curly, don’t subject yourself to hours of blow drying and flat ironing. Work with the texture you have to create a beautiful style that is recognisable as your own. You’ll save time, money, and hassle in the process.

Face shape

To some extent the shape of your face will dictate which hairstyles are most flattering. A long, oval shape will look even longer with straight curtains of hair on either side, whereas an updo will balance out this feature. A rounder face, on the other hand, will benefit from longer hair being worn down. If you’re unsure, go with a half-updo that tends to flatter most face shapes.

Dress style

The dress you choose will definitely play a role in how you decide to wear your hair. A strapless style works with hair up or down, depending on how much skin you want to show – if you chose a strapless gown, chances are you’re not concerned about revealing your back and neckline. As for classic styles with lace up to the neck, and updo is the best way to show off the dress.

Many brides choose to follow tradition and wear a veil. The good news is that there are veils designed to go with any hairstyle, whether you wear it down, up, or half-up. Some can even be pinned underneath a low bun or chignon. However, if you choose a veil first, it could dictate your ‘do, to an extent.

You might also want to consider non-veil embellishments like headbands, clips, pins, or even decorative jewels. These are less likely to determine your hairstyle since they’re generally added to whatever style you prefer. This makes them easier to work with than a veil.

Your stylist

It’s important to choose a stylist well in advance of your wedding so that you can begin planning early. If you’re having trouble deciding on a cut or colour, you have plenty of time to experiment, and a good stylist will take into account your hair type, your face shape, your dress, and other considerations when planning appropriate hairstyles to try.

A professional stylist will also know exactly when to schedule you in for a cut and colour in the days leading up to the wedding so that there is plenty of time to make a last-minute change should you decide you want something different. From there you can do a trial run on the hairstyle or styles you’ve selected to see how you like them.

Finally, your stylist will know just how to schedule on the big day so that you have plenty of time to get your hair and makeup done before you have to get your dress on and march down the aisle. With expert advice and guidance, a good stylist can alleviate some stress and help to ensure that you look amazing on your special day.
